As far as the 'L' serial number i saw conflicting documentation. one says 1953 the other said 1954. I saw the patent on the Micro groove was filed in 1953 but most 1954 rifles were the ones first came out with the MICRO GROOVE barrels. Model 39 Marlins with HS prefixes will date from 1932-37. Also 1938, but 1938 guns will have HS prefix and 39a style mag tubes. The late 39 also had the serrated buttplate, not the Marlin marked buttplate. Also the white buttplate spacer wasn't added until 1951 either. There was an insert, in the 1952 catalog, dated 3/52 that said the program was stopped. I found my scan of it.
