I haven't looked in the wheel well of a WL, but your description sounds similar to the wheel wells in the prior generation WK2s, which have a felt/carpet like lining. It is noisier when doing this. The screen blacking out, battery dropping, and trying to die, however, is not normal behavior.

This time the overheating problem was finally solved. The max temperature on a 200 mile road trip was 192 on an 8% grade.
