S. beyond the expiration date of a visa as long as you are maintaining your J-1 or H-1B status and the immigration document (DS-2019, I-797, etc.) remains valid. The I-94 you got at entry is no longer valid because it has been superseded by the newer (paper) I-94 you got from the extension of status. This is the only I-94 you should be looking at now.
