I don't recall if one option is a better choice since you can use the notes to craft a mastery book, or use the same number of notes to craft 10 skill points. I generally went for the books since I had a lot of luck getting them in drops or loot.

Collect yucca. Grilled yucca are a easy foods. Clay bowls of water or clay bowl of sap are great water early on too. Collect sap the same way as water. Read all the classes before picking one.
