Marlin 39a serial number dates.

I have a Marlin Model 39 or 39A with a serial number of 427168. I believe it is a Model 39A first model, except I can find nothing to validate the serial number and also, in all the pictures I have looked at, checking on the forend and butt stock grip. Starting in 1973, the year of manufacture maybe determined by subtracting the first two digits of the serial number from 100: Example: SN 2512345 would have been made in 1975 [100 - 25 = 75] and SN 94365295 would have been made in 2006 [ 100 - 94 = 06 (2006) ]. Boot1978; The Micro-Groove barrels did not show up until 1954 in the Model 39-A's. The white line spacer started in 1951. Your gun certainly must have a Ballard style rifled barrel if it does not have 16 lands and grooves that is found in the Micro-Groove barrel. The Ballard barrels have 6 lands and grooves.It's just a bulls eye that Marlin used to designate walnut stocks. And it's NOT the place to install a swivel as so many people have done over the years. Trigger color doesn't make a "Golden". Here's a 39A Mountie made in 1957 that doesn't say "Golden" but has a gold trigger. And a "Golden 39" made in 1982 that has a blued trigger.

Mine says No. 064xx on the top tang. With the large number made they were in the catalog for several years.Today, I purchased a used Marlin 39A. This Model 39-A will still have the older, Ballard style rifling instead of the newer, patented Micro-Groove rifling Marlin started using in 1954.

There is a thread somewhere on here that gives about all the serial number information if you want to do a "SEARCH" for it. It will give all the letter gun production dates as well as how to determine year of manufacture after the letter gun ceased.

You may have to post some pictures to help narrow down a date if you cannot find the serial number. The serial number will tell you when it was made. Try removing the butt stock to look for numbers on the side of the tangs. One thing we can tell you, is with the Micro-Groove rifling, it will hav been made sometime after 1954.
