The soul within the gem only asks that you never kill an animal strictly for its soul; use the animal completely (i.e. loot it and use the meat/pelt/whatever). You could, if you so desired, enchant the weapon and hold on to it in case of dire emergency (i.e. Dawnbreaker runs out of juice).
