Hominy Falls Mine Disaster. At approximately 10 a.m. May 6, 1968, a continuous miner machine at the Gauley Coal & Coke Saxsewell No. 8 mine in Nicholas County cut into an unmapped adjacent mine, which was filled with water.
Located right at the top and below Hominy Falls, you can see the falls from your coach. Over 2 acres of land for our use. A level gravel pad and driveway made parking easy and power and water are right next to the pad. Frogs are loud in the little pond right in front of the falls. The remains of an old Mill is in front of the site. Hominy is a product of field corn, called maize. Maize is dried and then soaked in an alkaline solution, usually lye or lime, to soften the tough outer hull. The kernels are then washed, which removes the outer hull, excess solution, and often the germ.
