I bought the rifle from SARCO for $900.00; fully assembled and head spaced. This is a cast receiver made by James River and looks to be cleanly milled and fits the stock tightly.

I didn't want a basic Springfield and wanted a forged reciever, completely unaware that LRB was a thing at that time. I knew of Fulton, Springfield, Bula, Norinco, and James River.

Have heard that JRA is offering or will perhaps a cast receiver for the M14, is that true?? No reason they should not but would assume doing so would be to be able to compete with other cast receiver mfg.'s.LRB and Bula are generally considered the best builders of forged receivers. A good M14 is as reliable as an M1. I would say a Springfield M1A falls in that category. I am with the others here: take advantage of Springfield's warranty and don't change a bunch of parts out. It's gorgeous, but when I try to "rock and lock" the factory Checkmate Industries 20 rounder in — it doesn't go in nice. However, taking the heel and cutting off the lug and welding it to a current made semi-auto receiver is NOT illegal, nor is it considered a machine gun.
