The Feather, Polsilver Super Iridium, and Personna “Med Prep” blades were easily the preferred, “top shelf” blades…for me. The Derby and Merkur blades were at the bottom of the heap…for me. Everything else was acceptable under most circumstances but not preferred…for me.
Alum is an astringent, a substance that contracts tissue. It's useful as a way of closing up those little nicks and cuts very quickly with little to no bleeding. It allows you to get on with your routine without having to wait too long for your blood to start clotting. Witch hazel is another type of astringent.It's well known that Merkur blades are (as long as feeling goes, because, to my best knowledge, nobody has measured) less sharp and Feather blades are on the sharper side of the spectrum. Lies Told to Newbies. (Before you read this, know that I am fully aware that every man's face is different. Add YMMV to every statement below.) Hi - I'm an old dude (50) who's been shaving with disposable cartridges for 35 years, and who is new to wet shaving. I'm three weeks in, and getting great, nick-free, non-irritated shaves.Southern Witchcrafts is great, but Zingari Man Vegan is the best. It’s the 3rd best base period in my opinion, behind only Lothur V2 and B&M Omnibus. A&E’s shave butter is also excellent, and I haven’t tried their VR1 base yet. 2. ssf837.Maggard Safety Razors are cheap and highly recommended for beginners. I strongly recommend this starter kit. The Parker 26C is exceptionally comfortable (disinclined to nick) and efficient, and at $29 is not out of sight. The Maggard razors will also work, as will the Edwin Jagger line, but the 26C, IMO, is better than either.
I have both the mild and medium. Quit cartridge razor's as I was getting bad razor burn on my neck to the point people were asking if I have been choked. I prefer the medium for my neck, but I started learning with the mild. Both will do you well and I think either should work. There isn't much difference in aggressiveness between the two.
I got a Merkur 34c at the beginning of the year, and after only ten months, the thread is completely busted, it's impossible to screw it on and therefore unusable. However, since I've only ever used cartridge razors I do not really know which one to get. The AL 13 comes in Mild and Medium [bought seperately], and the Rockwell 6s, well I probably do not have to tell you guys anything about the 6S.I returned my Rockwell T2 for 6S and couldn’t have been happier. Paste is a once every 3-6 weeks for 5-10 strokes maintenance that can help the edge go from needing a touchup on the stones every 6-9 months to more like 9-12 depending on how frequently you shave and how well your edge holds up. Don't hone your first, I have links in my post for people to mail to for first honing.You don’t need a cream. That said, a good cream or soap will make your shaves better. Blade changing can be subjective. Some push blades into the 100s of shaves. Some only use 1 blade per shave. I personally tend to change when I feel the blade isn’t cutting as well which works out to 7 - 15 shaves depending on blade.Razor blades are highly YMMV. Just trust your own experience. For the Twig. I loaded it up, and went to town trimming up the top and bottom edges of my beard. It worked flawlessly. Smooth, efficient, and fast without being rushed, even though I was sporting almost 10 days of growth. Highly recommend for that type of use. Anyway, this is my opinion obviously, so YMMV.

34C, though 23C is equally good, has a longer handle, & is cheaper. 34G, it still works great and it's aesthetics outshine even higher priced razors. Progress 510 with the long handle. I'd get one of the 3-piece ones like 23C, 33C or 42C, that way you can mix and match heads and handles if you get more down the road.
Merker Head clone. My travel razor. I like this King C Gilette safety razor for $30. Its comparable to my Merkur 34c in terms of smoothness in everyday shaving. You can pick it up in person at Walgreens too, cant go wrong with it.
